Gibson’s second single vineyard Barossa Shiraz, our Burkes Hill Single Site release epitomizes the elegance and understated power of Eden Valley Shiraz.
Our Burkes Hill vineyard in the Eden Valley has an almost spiritual sense of place. A Lutheran cross presides over the vines – symbolic of the faith held by many of the Barossa’s early European immigrants. An East-facing slope, Burkes Hill sits at approximately 430m above sea level. The vineyard has a long history of reliable origin for extraordinary quality wines, with the original Shiraz plantings being made in 1965.
A largely dry-grown site, the soil profiles, aspect, and topography of Burkes Hill offers sub-block diversity – a microcosm of our broadly employed Shiraz philosophy of multi-site blending. Following harvest, the fruit was fermented in one and two tonne open fermenters, hand plunged and basket pressed into new and seasoned French oak hogsheads.
